Tech Corner Countdown: Top 5 Scariest Modern TechnologiesPosted: October 25, 2011
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of the year, just behind Christmas. I have always had a morbid fascination with the macabre and twisted things that accompany the holiday. Along this vein, we are going to look at some legitimately scary modern technologies. Technologies that are not necessarily scary in the made up sense, but some that are quite literally terrifying, because they are real. So, without further ado; here are the Top 5 Scariest Modern Technologies. Enter in you Daaarreee MMWUUHAHH….Cough…cough….HAHAH….Cough…oh forget it, here they are:
While you might not associate this with being scary, you can’t sit there and tell me you have never gotten weirded out while strolling along through Wal-Mart, when all of a sudden you hear someones voice asking you to buy something. You look around only to see nobody close enough to you to have said that and nobody in the vicinity even looks alarmed! You are the ONLY one that hears this!!! are you hearing things? Is there a Wal-Mart Ghost? Not exactly….
It is called Directional Audio, if you look straight up when you hear this you will see the speakers. These speakers use a very pointed sound beam in what is called an Ultrasonic Frequency, which by itself is too high a frequency for the human ear to hear, however, it distorts the air which makes it become audible.
Take all of this and combine it into a strategically placed speaker, one begins to think a spirit is telling them to buy Alpo, just as they pass the dog food section.
Border Patrol Confiscations
Believe it or not (Hint: Believe It), the 9th Circuit Court states , it is 110% legal for Federal Customs and/or Border Patrol agents to confiscate any and all of your devices when entering the United States. If you’re like me, the chances of anything bad being installed, or found are slim to none. For most of us it is work files, family pictures, etc. The Scary part is, you never know when – or if – you will get your device back when/if it is confiscated.
The justification used is “A Matter National Security”, these officials can confiscate devices entering the country regardless of having probable cause.
I’m talking about an attack on the entire digital infrastructure of this country. What do I mean? I mean all those systems that are in place that control banking, e-commerce, the electrical grid, and most importantly defense systems (inlcuding missiles and nukes). A very strategically placed virus, or other types of cyber attack, could really cause some serious poo poo with these systems.
While there have been numerous advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) over the years, we are not quite to the place where we can expect Ahnold to step on the scene to tell us, “Come with me if you want to live…” I think we are a long way away, if ever, from seeing humankind take on the machines for it’s survival. However, the thought that there could be a time when computer networks could possibly become so self-aware through AI, and interfaces come along side human intelligence as the future goes on is more than a little creepy. Right now we just have Siri, Watson, and some cars that can park themselves, but it is slightly unsettling to think that there is a possibility of this happening and a possibility there is indeed.
And toping the list of the 5 most scary modern technolgies is (Drumroooooolllllll…)
The Hadron Collider is the largest and most powerful particle accelerator ever built. It is designed to smash particles together at astronomical speeds in an attempt to recreate the “Big Bang” and find the ever elusive Higgs Boson (a.k.a. the God Particle). While it is scary enough that people with this much intelligence can even believe that lightning struck a mud puddle and created the universe to begin with, and it is even scarier that these morons (err…I’m sorry geniuses) have the audacity to play God. However the absolute scariest thing about the Hadron Collider affects everyone; including those of us that realize this thing is a waste of time and money. It is absolutely terrifying and plausible that this thing could potentially create a black hole here on earth, or even a HIGHLY destructive magnetic field. I don’t care if the CERN scientists claim that if this happened they would decay too quickly to have any affect, the thought that they can do this period is pretty hair raising to me. Besides, I am sure the scientist at Chernobyl claimed something very similar as well, and we saw how that worked out.
Well there you have it, 5 very scary technologies for a very scary holiday that is upcoming. I hope I didn’t make you scared to turn out the light….nah, I doubt it….you are tough right?
